For 40 days, a renowned snake charmer lived in close quarters with 400 cobras.

Ali Khan Samsudin gained recognition for performing bold feats with a range of hazardous insects and animals, such as scorpions and snakes, while most of us tend to panic at the sight of a spider in the bathroom.

The Malaysian snake charmer achieved widespread recognition for his daring feats, including spending 12 hours daily for 40 consecutive days in a confined space with 400 cobras. This extraordinary accomplishment in the early 1990s earned him the moniker ‘Snake King,’ as he fearlessly interacted with the lethal reptiles, even going so far as to kiss them.

In 1997, Samsudin added another Guinness World Record to his name by enclosing himself in a container with 6,000 scorpions for a duration of three weeks.

Throughout his career, numerous snakes bit him, with the first incident occurring when he was 21 years old and bitten by a King Cobra. This initial bite was among an estimated 99 bites he experienced during his lifetime.

The fatal incident occurred in 2006 when a king cobra bit Samsudin on his left hand during a performance in Kuala Lumpur, marking the tragic end for the adventurous entertainer. According to his son, Amjad Khan, despite the bite, Samsudin didn’t seem excessively concerned as similar incidents had occurred multiple times in the past.

Samsudin’s health deteriorated in the subsequent days, leading to his emergency hospitalization and eventual passing.

Following his father’s legacy, Khan expressed, “For five generations, this trade has been our way of life. It’s ingrained in us, and we can’t envision pursuing anything different.”

However, Khan encountered challenges as he grappled with fear toward reptiles following the incident.

“He expressed to Free Malaysia Today earlier this year that his family felt deeply impacted by the loss, given his relative’s young age of 48. He was the individual responsible for taking their snake performances to international audiences, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Dastagir Hussein and great-grandfather Maulana Khan, who initially gained fame for their daring snake stunts within the country.

Following his father’s unexpected passing, Khan had to be persuaded by his mother, Mau Boh Bee, and other relatives to uphold the family tradition. Their persuasion centered on the belief that his father would not find peace unless Khan continued the legacy. Eventually, acknowledging the significant local history established by his family’s audacious performances, earning them the title of ‘Snake Kings,’ he acquiesced.”
