WTA Tour: Chief executive Steve Simon to relinquish role and become executive chairman

Steve Simon will step down from his position as chief executive of the WTA Tour, transitioning to the role of executive chairman once his successor is appointed. The decision to split the roles, which he has held since 2015, aims to enhance focus on the WTA’s objectives.

Simon’s leadership has faced scrutiny, particularly after criticisms during the WTA Finals in Cancun last month. Despite relinquishing the CEO role, Simon will remain actively involved in the WTA’s future, concentrating on governance, integrity, and strategic interests. The new chief executive will report to him. The move comes as part of a broader organizational review, independent of recent events.

Simon expressed optimism about player support and emphasized the organization’s growth. The WTA is actively seeking a female candidate for the CEO position with the support of global executive search firm Korn Ferry. Simon will continue to chair the board of WTA Ventures, the organization’s new commercial arm. The WTA, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, faced financial challenges but received a $150 million investment from CVC Capital Partners. Despite a turbulent year, Simon stands by decisions, including the suspension of Chinese tournaments in December 2021 over concerns for athlete safety and the handling of sexual assault allegations involving Peng Shuai.
