The Marine Corps pilot ejected safely from the F-35 Lightning II jet over North Charleston following a “mishap” on Sunday afternoon. Authorities at the Joint Base Charleston are conducting search efforts in coordination with federal aviation regulators, focusing on areas around two lakes north of Charleston.

Joint Base Charleston has reached out to local residents for assistance, urging anyone with information that could aid in locating the F-35 to contact the Base Defense Operations Center. In response to the news, Congresswoman Nancy Mace expressed her astonishment on social media, questioning the circumstances of losing an F-35 and the absence of tracking devices, while also pondering the need to involve the public in the search.

It’s worth noting that each of these Lockheed Martin-manufactured planes costs approximately $80 million, according to an AFP report.
