UK comedian Russell Brand accused of rape, sexual assault: Media

Four women have come forward to accuse British comedian and actor Russell Brand of rape, sexual assault, and abuse during the period between 2006 and 2013, which coincided with the peak of his fame. These allegations were uncovered through a joint investigation conducted by three prominent British news organizations: The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches.

The accusers, who were acquainted with Brand, claim that the sexual assaults occurred during his tenure with Radio 2 and Channel 4, as well as his involvement in Hollywood films. The allegations include one instance of rape and an assault that took place when one of the women was 16 and still in school. Two of the accusers assert that the incidents occurred in Los Angeles.

Channel 4’s documentary program Dispatches was scheduled to provide further details about the allegations, and clips of the women describing the incidents were broadcasted on social media.

Russell Brand, aged 48, vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that all of his relationships have been consensual. The Sunday Times did not mention whether any of the women had reported their complaints to the police.

In a video message posted on social media, Brand stated, “Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute.” He acknowledged his past promiscuity but emphasized that his relationships were always consensual and transparent.

Brand also suggested that he was the target of a “coordinated attack.”

The joint investigation by The Sunday Times and Dispatches commenced in 2019. Russell Brand gained fame as a stand-up comedian in Britain during the early 2000s, which led to prominent roles on Channel 4 and later Radio. He hosted the chat show “Big Brother’s Big Mouth” and transitioned to Hollywood, appearing in films like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” (2008) and the remake of “Arthur” (2011). He was married to US pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012. In recent years, Brand transformed into a political commentator and influencer, using platforms like YouTube to discuss topics such as personal freedom and the COVID-19 pandemic.
