Complaints and building inspectors were mobilized after a new logo for Elon Musk’s social network caused strobing effects over a San Francisco neighborhood.
A large illuminated X has been placed on the roof of Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco, where Elon Musk intends to establish his newly acquired messaging platform, formerly known as Twitter. However, this display has not been well-received by city officials and some residents.
The neighbors around the headquarters have voiced complaints about the intrusive nature of the bright lights emitted by the X logo. Responding to the concerns raised, San Francisco’s building inspection department has initiated an investigation into the matter.
Despite the discontent among certain quarters, Elon Musk remains steadfast in his decision to keep the renamed company in San Francisco. He acknowledged the city’s recent challenges, referring to it as a “doom spiral” with several companies leaving or shutting down, but he still chose to maintain the company’s presence there. Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 for a staggering $44 billion.
In 2021, Elon Musk decided to relocate Tesla’s company headquarters from California to Texas. However, he expressed a sentimental attachment to San Francisco, stating, “Beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend.”
Despite Musk’s gesture, not all San Franciscans welcomed his friendship. Over the weekend, videos emerged showing the giant Tesla X logo, which was relocated to Texas, glowing, pulsing, and strobing. Some residents criticized the lights as intrusive and disruptive to the city’s ambiance. Christopher Beale even tweeted a picture of the illuminated X logo as seen from his location.
Patricia Wallinga, a resident living opposite the glowing logo, expressed her concern to CBS news, describing the situation as a “danger” and a “clown show”. She initially mistook the bright illumination for lightning, leaving her bewildered. Attorney George Wolf also spoke to CBS, emphasizing that local residents should have been given the opportunity to approve or reject such developments. He criticized Musk’s approach as reckless, characterizing it as part of his business strategy to act first and rectify issues later.
Twitter user @itsmefrenchy123 stated they would be “LIVID” if they had to deal with such a bright logo across from their bedroom. Another Twitter user, @DollyMarlowe, expressed her dismay at the blatant disregard for other people’s comfort.
In response to the situation, San Francisco’s building inspectors hinted at a possible violation of city regulations. One report indicated that company representatives had denied inspectors access to the roof on two occasions to check the logo. According to the inspector, a company representative had claimed the sign was temporary.
Christopher Beale shared on Twitter that the logo’s lights had been turned off on Sunday night, but questioned for how long they would stay off.
