Critics worldwide are expressing concern and condemnation over Israel’s assault on Gaza’s largest hospital, al-Shifa. Governments, United Nations agencies, and aid organizations are distressed by the direct targeting of a medical facility that should be a safe haven under the rules of war. The UN’s undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Martin Griffiths, emphasized that hospitals should not be battlegrounds, and the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called the attacks deeply concerning. The International Committee of the Red Cross expressed extreme concern about the impact on the sick, wounded, medical staff, and civilians.
The Palestinian Authority denounced Israel’s operation as a flagrant violation of international law and called for urgent international intervention to protect civilians in the hospital. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas described the situation as a barbaric war of aggression and an open war of genocide against the people in Gaza and the West Bank. World leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, voiced condemnation, with Erdogan warning that Israel could be seen as a universally condemned terrorist state. Jordan accused the UN Security Council of enabling barbarism through its silence and called for action.
The global criticism adds to mounting concerns over Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and its refusal to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire. More than 11,000 people are reported to have been killed in the enclave, with additional condemnation from countries like Belize, which suspended diplomatic ties with Israel and recalled its ambassador due to what it termed “indiscriminate bombing.”
