Crafting the Web of Success: Bryan Intihar on Developing Spider-Man 2 for PS5

Insomniac Games’ Senior Creative Director, Bryan Intihar, delves into the expansive nature of ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’ and how the sequel will present both physical and psychological challenges for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

In the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, New York City faces an onslaught of villains, including the menacing Venom. Intihar explained that the aim was always to craft a story that befits the presence of two Spider-Men, thereby introducing unique trials that will test Peter and Miles in unprecedented ways.

“The reason we titled it Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is because we wanted to feature both Peter and Miles,” Intihar noted. “Our goal was to narrate an epic tale of two Spider-Men, and I believe we’ve accomplished that. We’ve delivered on that promise.”

He continued, “We aimed to create adversaries that would necessitate the combined efforts of two Spider-Men to save the day, hence the inclusion of Venom and the challenges posed by characters like Kraven and Lizard, challenging our heroes in ways they’ve never experienced before, whether physically or psychologically.”

He further highlighted the game’s expanded scale, encompassing the enlargement of the city with the addition of Queens and Brooklyn, the introduction of new traversal abilities via the Web Wings, and the pivotal role of the symbiote in both gameplay and narrative. The title “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” was chosen with the intention of earning it, and this was the creative journey they embarked on.

Nadji Jeter, the actor behind Miles Morales, shared insights into how the inclusion of Brooklyn in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will impact his character’s growth, emphasizing Miles’ transition from a high school student to a young man taking ownership of his identity.

The actors portraying Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, Yuri Lowenthal and Laura Bailey, reflected on the significance of Aunt May’s house in Queens and its role in the characters’ evolving relationships, as they grapple with the legacy left behind by Aunt May and consider their own futures and family stability.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Story Lead Jon Paquette discussed the tonal shift brought about by the inclusion of the suburbs, contrasting with the bustling energy of the city, and how it shapes the characters’ thoughts and perspectives, with Miles in the city and Peter and company in Queens.
