Aretha Franklin’s Handwritten Couch Will Declared Valid Amidst Family Disputes

“Late Aretha Franklin’s Handwritten Will, Discovered in Couch, Deemed Valid Amid Family Disputes”

Rifts within the family of the late Aretha Franklin, stemming from the discovery of two documents in a cabinet and couch after her 2018 death, have taken a pivotal turn. A Michigan jury declared Franklin’s handwritten will, found in her couch, as valid on Tuesday. The dispute, involving three of her four sons, revolves around whether the papers dated 2014 should supersede a 2010 will discovered simultaneously in a locked cabinet. The verdict is a win for Franklin’s second oldest and youngest children, Edward and Kecalf. The singer did not leave a formal, typewritten will, but both handwritten documents emerged in 2019, causing a family rift. Franklin’s estate, once valued at $80 million, has dwindled to $6 million, and the ongoing will dispute adds to the unresolved matters.

Differences between the 2010 and 2014 versions include provisions regarding the distribution of assets, with the 2014 will specifying that Kecalf Franklin and grandchildren inherit Franklin’s main home in Bloomfield Hills. The 2010 will mandated business classes for Kecalf and Edward Franklin to benefit from the estate, a provision absent in the 2014 version. The estate managers have been addressing bills, tax debts, and generating income, but the will dispute remains unsettled. The late singer’s longtime entertainment lawyer, Don Wilson, highlighted her private nature, explaining her inclination to draft her will without formal legal assistance. Aretha Franklin, a global star known for hits like “Think,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “Respect,” passed away at the age of 76 after battling pancreatic cancer.

A recently found handwritten will of the late singer Aretha Franklin, discovered in a couch, has been declared valid, despite earlier disputes among her sons regarding its legitimacy.
