Netflix’s expanding array of original content now includes “All the Light We Cannot See,” a new adaptation of the Anthony Doerr novel directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things).
The four-part series follows the journey of Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti), a blind French girl, and her father, Daniel LeBlanc (Mark Ruffalo), as they escape German-occupied Paris at the onset of World War II. Carrying a legendary diamond, they strive to prevent it from falling into Nazi hands. The narrative intertwines with German soldier Werner (Louis Hofmann), a teenage boy reluctantly drafted into Hitler’s regime due to his radio-related intelligence.
This nuanced and contemplative drama features a fitting soundtrack composed by James Newton Howard, a renowned composer and music producer with a prolific career spanning over 100 films, including Pretty Woman, The Hunger Games franchise, and The Dark Knight.
The official soundtrack enhances the series’s most intense and emotional moments, reflecting Howard’s commitment to capturing the resilience of the human spirit amid adversity. The composer, in an interview with Netflix, shared that he was drawn to the project even before seeing any footage, aiming to evoke a sense of optimism.
Howard’s approach involves a diverse musical palette, incorporating synthesisers, sound design, and electronics to complement the core elements of piano, solo violin, and orchestra. The Model City theme, a track central to the emotional core of the score, extends from Marie’s early years into her adolescence, featuring a specially crafted violin solo by acclaimed violinist James Ehnes.
Released on the show’s premiere day, the album captures the essence of the series, offering a moving and atmospheric musical experience. In addition to the official soundtrack, the series prominently features Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” a classical piano masterpiece known for its appearances in films like Twilight, The Purge, and Ocean’s Eleven. In “All the Light We Cannot See,” the piece symbolizes hope, accompanying the professor’s radio broadcasts and holding significance for both Marie-Laure and Werner.
