At a high school in Arras, France, a teacher was tragically killed in a stabbing incident which also left two other individuals severely injured. The attack took place around 11:00 local time at Gambetta high school.
The individual responsible for the attack has been detained. Witnesses claim that during the attack, he yelled “Allahu Akbar”, which translates to “God is greatest”. President Emmanuel Macron, after visiting the site, denounced the “brutality of Islamist terrorism” and urged the French populace to remain united and resist succumbing to fear and division. He disclosed that police had thwarted another potential attack elsewhere in the country.
The individual who lost his life was a teacher of the French language, and the injured parties include another educator and a security officer. Macron praised the deceased teacher’s courage, stating that his actions likely saved many lives.
The assailant, identified as Mohamed Mogouchkov, a 20-year-old Russian of Chechen descent, had prior connections with Islamist extremism, as per police records. He was an ex-student of the school, and his extremist beliefs had previously raised concerns among the staff.
The French anti-terrorism prosecution office has initiated an inquiry into the attack, investigating it as “murder linked to a terrorist act” and “attempted murder linked to a terrorist act”. BFMTV, a news outlet, has reported that the attacker’s sibling is now in police custody. The police have confirmed the situation is under control.
This violent incident has occurred amidst heightened tensions between France’s significant Muslim and Jewish communities, stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict. Nevertheless, there’s no current evidence to connect the attack to the Middle Eastern conflict.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar tragic event nearly three years ago when a teacher named Samuel Paty was killed outside a school near Paris. The attacker in that case, Abdullakh Anzorov, an 18-year-old Russian Muslim refugee, was subsequently neutralized by the police.
