Stunning Pillars of Creation portrait captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope

The agency said on Wednesday that NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captured the iconic Pillars of Creation at the place where new stars are forming in dense clouds of gas and dust.

According to NASA, The three-dimensional pillars look like majestic rock formations but are a lot more permeable. These columns are composed of cold interstellar gas and dust that appear translucent in near-infrared light.

The lava-like wavy lines at the ends of some of the pillars are emissions from the star still forming in the gas and dust. These stars are estimated to be hundreds of thousands of years old, which is relatively young life for a star.

The view of the Pillars of Creation first became famous when NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope photographed it in 1995. This scene was revisited in 2014 to show a sharper and wider field of view in visible light. Webb’s new take on the Pillars of Creation allows researchers to refine models of star formation by pinpointing the number of newly formed stars and the amount of gas and dust in the region much more accurately, according to NASA. Scientists will be working to improve our understanding of how stars form and erupt from these dusty clouds over millions of years.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the leading space science observatory in the world.

According to NASA, Webb will solve the mysteries of our solar system and beyond the distant worlds around other stars to examine our universe’s mysterious structure and origins and our place within it.

Led by NASA along with the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, Webb is an international program.
