In the northeastern state of Sikkim, a cloud burst has triggered significant flash floods, resulting in the disappearance of at least 23 Indian army personnel, according to officials.

The cloud burst took place upstream of a lake in the northern part of the state, causing a rapid surge in water levels in the Teesta River within Lachen Valley. The situation worsened as additional water was released from a nearby dam into the river. Some army vehicles have reportedly been submerged in the slush.

The Indian defense ministry has informed that a search and rescue operation is underway, and they are awaiting further information.

Rescue efforts are also in progress in other areas of the state, where entire neighborhoods have been inundated, causing damage to homes and displacing residents. Authorities have initiated the evacuation of people from low-lying areas.

Additionally, two bridges connecting the northern region of the state to the rest of the area have been washed away, severely disrupting transportation services.

Sikkim, being a Himalayan state, is susceptible to floods and natural disasters. Just last year, severe flooding in the state displaced tens of thousands of people and claimed the lives of at least 24 individuals.
