Shohei Ohtani wants to help Los Angeles Dodgers achieve success with historic deal

Shohei Ohtani has chosen to defer the majority of his record-breaking contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, totaling $680 million of his $700 million 10-year deal. The arrangement involves receiving $2 million annually until 2034, followed by $68 million per year until 2043. Ohtani, a two-time American League Most Valuable Player, emphasized that his decision aims to help the Dodgers succeed in Major League Baseball by providing them with more flexibility under salary cap rules.

In a statement on Thursday, Ohtani explained his rationale, saying, “I figured if I can defer as much money as I can and that’s going to help the Dodgers be able to sign better players and make a better team, I felt that was worth it and was willing to go that direction.” He highlighted the shared passion, vision, and history of winning between him and the Dodgers, expressing readiness for new challenges with the team.

Ohtani, having previously played for the Los Angeles Angels, joined the Dodgers in the largest deal in baseball history after the expiration of his contract with the Angels. The player, known for his exceptional skills in both batting and pitching, is expected to contribute significantly to the Dodgers’ success.

While Ohtani will be unable to pitch for the Dodgers in 2024 due to surgery on his right elbow, he remains optimistic about his readiness for the 2024 season opener on March 20 against the San Diego Padres. The surgery, undertaken in October, was described as “completely different” from a previous procedure in 2018. Ohtani’s decision reflects his commitment to supporting the Dodgers’ quest for success and building a stronger team.
