Russia accuses Ukraine of Moscow drone attack

Russia has accused Ukraine of being responsible for a drone attack that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, damaging two buildings in Moscow, the capital of Russia. According to the Russian defense ministry, two drones were neutralized and crashed in the incident, resulting in no casualties.

The state-owned Tass news agency reported that one of the drones fell close to the Russian defense ministry’s location. However, Ukrainian officials have not yet responded or claimed responsibility for the attack, which is consistent with their typical approach to attacks inside Russia.

In a separate incident, officials appointed by Russia in Crimea ordered residents to evacuate from a district after an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on an ammunition depot in the northern Dzhankoi area. No casualties were reported in this incident.

Additionally, Ukraine reported that four people were injured, and a grain hangar was destroyed in a Russian drone attack on two ports on the River Danube in the southern Odesa region. Russia has been conducting frequent attacks on the Odesa region since withdrawing from a significant grain deal the previous week.

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that the drone strikes in the Russian capital targeted two non-residential buildings and did not cause major damage. However, state news agencies reported that drone fragments were found about 2 km away from the defense ministry’s buildings.

The Russian defense ministry claimed that the attack was an attempted terrorist act by the Kyiv regime using two drones on Moscow’s territory, which they successfully thwarted. Moscow has accused Ukraine of various drone attacks on Russian territory in recent months, including an incident where flights were diverted from Vnukovo International Airport.

The recent attack on Moscow occurred just one day after Russia launched missile strikes on Odesa, destroying the historic Transfiguration Cathedral. In response to this attack, Unesco, the UN’s cultural agency, expressed deep dismay and strong condemnation for the assault on Odesa’s historic center. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed retaliation for the attack and emphasized that the targets of such missile strikes are not only cities and villages but humanity and the foundations of European culture.
