November is a Transgender Awareness Month, Kathy Hochul declares

Governor Kathy Hochul issued a proclamation on Wednesday declaring November Transgender Awareness Month in New York City. Hochul said he recognizes that several state landmarks will be lit up in pink, white and light blue on November 20 in honor of Transgender Day.

“This November, I’m proud to celebrate Transgender Awareness Month to highlight the countless contributions that members of the transgender community have made to our state. Along with Transgender Day of Remembrance, this is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the discrimination and attacks transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary people face across the world. My administration will continue to stand with the transgender community as we fight to ensure all New Yorkers can live with the dignity and equality they deserve,”  Governor Hochul said.

Hochul also announced Wednesday that the New York State Department of Human Rights has created a public notice (PSA) on the Rights of Transgender and Gender Nonconforming People in the Workplace to try to prevent discrimination. The PSA will run on multiple social media platforms in honor of his November, which is now Transgender Awareness Month.

The Department of Employee Relations has also created new training videos that examine issues faced by transgender and gender nonconforming employees in the workplace. This video will be used to train and improve cultural literacy related to trans communities across the state’s workforce, from Buffalo to Albany to the North Country to New York City to Long Island.

Based on information already available in the Gender Identity Toolkit of the Office of Employee Relations, a statewide learning management system, the new Gender ID in the Workplace video addresses the use of pronouns, gender-neutral language, confidentiality and workplace confidentiality. Workplace exposure and gender microaggressions. The video is in final production and the Office of Employee Relations looks forward to launching new training in 2023 as part of its mandatory training program for executive branch employees.
