New golf ball rules: R&A and USGA opt to limit distance ball will travel in air

Golf’s prominent long hitters may experience a reduction of approximately 15 yards in the distance their tee shots can travel, following rule changes announced by the R&A and United States Golf Association. The alterations to ball specifications will impact all players, with recreational golfers, who generally lack the rapid swing speeds of professionals, expected to see a more modest reduction of fewer than five yards on their longest shots. The new measures, effective from January 2028 for elite players and phased introduction for recreational golfers in 2030, focus on conforming golf balls to strict testing protocols and the ‘Overall Distance Standard.’

Modern premium golf balls, coupled with the latest large-headed drivers, have contributed to unprecedented distances in tee shots. Notably, top golfers like Rory McIlroy have achieved drives averaging over 320 yards, emphasizing the need for regulatory adjustments to maintain the sport’s balance.

The revised rules aim to address the impact of technological advancements over the past two decades, providing a fair reduction of 15 yards for the longest hitters. For the average recreational golfer, the impact is expected to be less than five yards.
