Miss Universe Indonesia: Contestants allege sexual abuse

Several candidates for Miss Universe Indonesia have filed police complaints against organizers, alleging sexual abuse. The contestants claim that they were instructed to remove their tops for “body checks” and photographs just two days prior to the finals on August 3rd. Organizers purportedly told the women that they needed to assess any scars, cellulite, or tattoos on their bodies. This incident has raised concerns about violating the rights of the contestants, with one stating that it has taken a toll on her mental well-being and sleep.

Mellisa Anggraeni, a lawyer representing three of the complainants, has indicated that more individuals are likely to come forward. The Jakarta police have announced their intention to conduct a thorough investigation. The Miss Universe Indonesia Organization, owned by celebrity Poppy Capella, has committed to looking into the allegations. The global Miss Universe Organization has also acknowledged the matter, emphasizing its commitment to addressing allegations of sexual misconduct.

While body checks are customary in Indonesia, it is unusual for contestants to be required to undress. Former Miss Indonesia Maria Harfanti noted that organizers typically assess contestants’ body proportions through measurements like BMI. The complainants revealed that the body checks were conducted in a closed room, but with men present and the door slightly ajar, allowing outsiders to observe.

Beauty pageants are accepted in Indonesia, but organizers often strive to avoid offending conservative sections of society. In 2013, the Miss World pageant eliminated its bikini round when held in the predominantly Muslim nation.

Miss Universe, in its 73rd edition, enjoys popularity in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Winners often gain celebrity status and influence on social media platforms. Anne Jakrajutatip, the owner of the Miss Universe brand and a Thai transgender woman, has worked to modernize the competition by welcoming married women, transgender women, and single mothers to participate.
