A tragic incident occurred in northern Mexico when the roof of a church collapsed, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives, including three children. The catastrophe unfolded during a baptism ceremony at the Santa Cruz church in Ciudad Madero, with approximately 100 attendees present.
The collapse transpired on Sunday afternoon, local time, causing injuries to 60 individuals, with at least two of them in critical condition. Many were trapped beneath the debris, prompting local residents to rush to the scene armed with shovels and pickaxes to aid in the rescue efforts.
Search and rescue teams have subsequently arrived, and two cranes are on-site to remove the rubble. The governor of Tamaulipas has confirmed that all those reported missing have been located, and thermal imaging cameras were employed to ensure no one remained trapped.
While the exact cause of the collapse remains uncertain, the mayor of Ciudad Madero suggested it may be attributed to “structural failures.” Ángel Vargas, the priest conducting the baptisms, expressed the profound tragedy of the situation, emphasizing the contrast between the intended celebration and the ensuing calamity.
Local journalist Franc Contreras relayed that Red Cross officials indicated the roof had fallen onto the church pews, potentially allowing those trapped to survive in air pockets. A survivor, Josefina Ramírez, shared her harrowing experience on social media, recounting her attendance at the baptism of her godchild and her relief at escaping the ordeal.
Local media reported that one trapped individual managed to send a WhatsApp message, aiding rescuers in locating them. Among the victims were reported to be a toddler and a couple with their eight-year-old son, as detailed by Mexican newspaper Milenio.
The bishop of the diocese of Tampico, where the church is situated, offered his prayers for the victims and their families during this tragic incident.
