The incident occurred on Wednesday night, causing the destruction of several homes. Rescue efforts were temporarily suspended due to heavy rain, but they have now resumed. The location of the disaster, situated on a hilltop, is presenting challenges for rescue operations due to the difficult terrain.

The Maharashtra government has reported that approximately 109 people are still trapped under the debris. The region has been experiencing heavy rainfall for the past two weeks, leading to floods and landslides in several states across India. The country’s weather department predicts that heavy rainfall will persist in parts of Maharashtra, including Raigad district, in the coming days.

Eyewitnesses in the remote village situated on the slope of a hill described the landslide hitting their area around 22:30 local time. Many houses have suffered damage, with 17 out of 50 being affected. Residents recount the sudden shaking of the ground, prompting them to flee their homes. The terrain has become slippery due to the rains, making it challenging for heavy machinery to reach the disaster spot. Consequently, much of the mud must be cleared manually.

Various rescue teams, including NDRF teams, the police, and medical personnel, are involved in relief efforts. Local residents and trekkers are also assisting in the rescue operations. Relief camps have been set up at the base of the hill, and around 98 people have been rescued so far.

The government is prioritizing the evacuation of people from the scene and providing immediate medical treatment to the injured. Federal home minister Amit Shah tweeted about the importance of these efforts. In response to the tragedy, Maharashtra’s chief minister, Eknath Shinde, has announced compensation of 500,000 rupees ($6,000; £4,700) to the families of those who lost their lives.
