Dan Wootton has been temporarily removed from GB News due to remarks made by Laurence Fox on his program. Fox had controversially commented on reporter Ava Evans’ attractiveness, leading to his suspension from the network. Evans has revealed receiving threats post the incident.
Wootton has since apologized for not stepping in during Fox’s comments. GB News labeled Fox’s statement as entirely inappropriate and is currently looking into the matter. Fox, however, remains steadfast in his views.
The debate started over Evans’ perspective on the need for a ‘minister for men.’ In a later episode, Fox made derogatory comments about her, with Wootton laughing during the segment. Following the episode, Evans described her emotional turmoil and the threats she’s received, expressing her concerns about safety. She has since received an apology from GB News’ editor, emphasizing that Fox’s words don’t reflect the channel’s stance.
Evans is urging Conservative MPs to reconsider their appearances on GB News, uncomfortable with their presence amidst the narrative set by such comments. Further, she disclosed Wootton’s persistent calls post the incident, which she found intrusive.
Before his suspension, Wootton had intended to personally apologize to Evans. After the episode, Fox posted online content suggesting he and Wootton had laughed off the event. The former actor, known for his role in Gosford Park, believes the channel was aware of his intended remarks and criticizes the media for trying to “cancel” him. He awaits the results of a disciplinary hearing.
His comments have sparked widespread criticism, with politicians like Conservative MP Caroline Nokes expressing disgust at such outdated and misogynistic views. She even proposed the idea of removing GB News from the broadcasting platform. Other political figures have echoed her sentiments.
Media regulator Ofcom has received several complaints regarding the episode, which they are currently evaluating. Stewart Purvis, ex-CEO of ITN, highlighted potential rule violations by the channel. Meanwhile, Mark Dolan, substituting for Wootton, condemned Fox’s remarks.
This scandal follows another concerning Wootton, where his Mail Online column was halted due to alleged misconduct, which he denies.
Since its launch in June 2021, GB News has vowed to revolutionize UK news and debate.
