Has Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin, made a return to the world of cryptocurrency? Not quite, but the Twitter account @satoshi has resurfaced with a new post focusing on the 2008 Bitcoin white paper.
The apparent reactivation of this account, complete with a “verified account” blue checkmark, raises questions about the credibility of such checks. On Monday, the account under the name Satoshi Nakamoto posted, “Bitcoin is a predicate machine,” adding, “Over the following months, we shall explore different aspects that were not explicitly contained within the white paper.”
This marks the second tweet from the account this week, with its previous activity dating back to October 2018. Some Twitter users have added community notes to the post, suggesting that the @satoshi account is linked to Craig Wright, who has long claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto.
Entrepreneur and former nChain CEO Christen Ager-Hanssen commented on the timing of the @satoshi account’s use, speculating that it coincides with his own exposure of Craig Wright. He suggested that the account has been taken over by Craig.
Craig Wright has maintained for nearly a decade that he is the inventor of Bitcoin. He has been involved in various legal disputes related to Bitcoin, including a case involving 12 Bitcoin Core developers. In February, Wright lost a copyright lawsuit in a UK court where he claimed that forks of Bitcoin infringed on his intellectual property.
Throughout the years, several individuals have been suggested as possible candidates for the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, including Elon Musk, Adam Back, Dorian Nakamoto, Hal Finney, and Nick Szabo.
In December, Hal Finney’s Twitter account became active again after a decade of inactivity, with his wife, Fran, posting a statement to prevent the account from being deleted. This happened after Elon Musk briefly took control of the account earlier in the year.
