Insomniac: Spider-Man 2 PlayStation studio victim of huge hack

The video game studio responsible for Spider-Man 2 has fallen victim to a significant ransomware attack. Hackers, demanding a $2 million ransom from Sony-owned Insomniac, the studio behind the Play Station 5 hit, have exposed information including details about upcoming releases and work-in-progress footage of the anticipated Wolverine game. The leaked data, encompassing private employee information and internal company emails, has prompted condemnation from fellow game developers, journalists, and fans.

Remedy Games, the developer of Alan Wake 2, expressed sympathy for the affected team members and denounced the malicious disclosure of personal information. The responsible ransomware group, Rhysida, has claimed responsibility for this attack and a similar one on the British Library. This method involves infecting a company’s computer network with malicious software, locking its files, and demanding payment for their restoration. Insomniac had released limited official information about the Wolverine game, featuring only a teaser trailer in 2021 and confirming its “mature” tone compared to the Spider-Man games.

This incident follows a trend of high-profile game studio leaks, such as the details of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 last year, attributed to a different hacking group that targeted Uber and Nvidia. Notably, an 18-year-old member of that group released the clips while on bail in a Travelodge hotel during the UK court proceedings.
