German police are currently managing a hostage situation at Hamburg Airport, triggered by an armed man who breached security barriers and drove onto the tarmac. The incident involves a 35-year-old man and a 4-year-old child, who remain in the vehicle parked beneath an aircraft. The airport, closed since the Saturday evening entry of the suspect at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT), has suspended all flights indefinitely.
Law enforcement is in communication with the armed driver, and while the situation is described as “tense,” the ongoing dialogue is considered a positive sign. The Hamburg police spokesperson, Sandra Levgruen, highlighted the potential threat, acknowledging the presence of a firearm and the possibility of explosive devices. Despite the uncertainties, the child is believed to be unharmed.
The sequence of events began when the man drove his car onto the airport’s apron, the area designated for aircraft parking. Reports indicate that he parked beneath a Turkish Airlines plane, fired shots into the air, and threw incendiary bottles from the vehicle.
Authorities suspect the incident stems from a “custody dispute,” with the child’s mother alerting emergency services after the 4-year-old was taken. Levgruen noted that the man disagreed with custody decisions and aimed to travel to Turkey with the child, expressing dissatisfaction with his life circumstances.
Negotiations with the suspect, conducted in Turkish through a translator, have been reported by local media. The individual’s connection to Turkey remains unclear. Psychologists and specialized negotiation officers, along with special forces, are present at the scene.
Hamburg Airport has experienced significant disruptions, with approximately half of Sunday’s scheduled departures and arrivals canceled, and some flights diverted. Ongoing delays and cancellations are anticipated throughout the day.
