Ex-Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio jailed for 22 years for Capitol riot

Enrique Tarrio, once the leader of the Proud Boys, received a 22-year prison sentence for his role in planning the 6 January 2021 US Capitol attack. This is the harshest punishment given to date for this event. Tarrio, 39, wasn’t present at the Capitol on the day but was instrumental in mobilizing the far-right group. While departing the court, he flashed a peace or victory sign.

The Department of Justice has arrested over 1,100 individuals so far due to the riot. The rioters were backing former President Donald Trump, who continues to dispute the 2020 election results. Trump has stated he might pardon the convicted rioters if he returns to office in 2024.

Tarrio was found guilty in May for plotting to overthrow the government among other charges. During sentencing, he was depicted as a “naturally charismatic leader” who played a pivotal role in the conspiracy. Prosecutors highlighted his online encouragement of the rioters during the event, even though he was not on location.

Judge Timothy Kelly stated that Tarrio began planning an attack on the Capitol in December 2020. Tarrio apologized for his actions in the court, expressing deep remorse and requesting mercy.

Despite being the national chairman of the Proud Boys, a far-right group established in 2016 in NYC, Tarrio claimed he wasn’t a “political zealot” and never believed he could alter the election results.

Tarrio’s defense portrayed him as a “keyboard ninja” with no genuine intent to overthrow the government, though Judge Kelly countered, stating Tarrio frequently showed no regret. Tarrio’s convictions also included charges of obstruction, conspiracy, and property destruction.

Prosecutors had sought a 33-year sentence, while the defense had hoped for no more than 15. As he left the court, Tarrio signaled to his family and showed a two-finger salute. He is expected to appeal the verdict.

Other key participants in the riot have also faced severe sentences. Notably, Ethan Nordean received 18 years, Stewart Rhodes got 18 years, and several other Proud Boys received significant prison time.

The Capitol riot’s charges range from entering a restricted area to assaulting and conspiring. About 200 rioters have admitted to felony charges, with the FBI still on the hunt for some who were captured on video during the attack.
