David Beckham documentary: Victoria says alleged affair was ‘hardest period’ of marriage

Victoria Beckham has openly discussed her husband David’s widely-publicized alleged affair, characterizing it as the “most challenging period” in their marriage. The couple has previously refuted claims of David’s infidelity during his time with Real Madrid in 2003.

In a newly released Netflix documentary titled “Beckham,” the former Spice Girl expressed, “It was an incredibly challenging time for us because it felt like the entire world was against us.” She added, “Truth be told, we were against each other as well.”

While the documentary does not delve into the specific details of the affair, Victoria acknowledged, “You know, until we moved to Madrid, it sometimes felt like it was us against everyone else. But we were together, we were connected, we had each other. However, when we were in Spain, it didn’t feel like we had each other either. And that’s heartbreaking.”

She continued, “I cannot even begin to describe how difficult it was and how it impacted me.” Speaking about the media scrutiny they faced after she and their children joined David in Spain, she lamented, “It was a nightmare. From the moment we arrived, the press was there, following us everywhere we went.”

Victoria likened it to a circus, stating, “It’s quite entertaining when the circus comes to town, isn’t it? Unless you’re part of it.”

When asked if she had resented her husband during that period, she candidly admitted, “If I’m being completely honest, yes, I did. It was probably the unhappiest I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

In the series, David Beckham, the former England and Manchester United midfielder who now owns Inter Miami, also discussed how the rumors surrounding his extramarital affairs affected him and their family. He said, “There were some terrible stories that were hard to cope with. It was the first time that Victoria and I had experienced that kind of pressure in our marriage.”

He added, “At the time, we both felt like we were not losing each other, but drowning. I honestly don’t know how we managed to get through it.”

Reviews of the documentary noted that the filmmakers kept discussions about David’s alleged infidelities somewhat vague. The Independent’s four-star review observed, “Posh and Becks are willing to talk about many things, from clashes with Fergie to memorable moments on the football field, but director Fisher Stevens handles the more sensitive topics delicately.”

The Guardian also gave the documentary four stars, describing it as a “candid, captivating glimpse into the footballer’s life.”

The Telegraph gave it a perfect score, praising it as a “superb, intimate, and occasionally heart-wrenching portrayal of an unexpectedly complex man.” The paper’s review highlighted that “Beckham” differs from sports documentaries that serve as mere public relations exercises, instead offering insights into David’s career and family life.

The Beckham family, married since 1999 and with four children, attended the London premiere of the series.
