David Beckham Cops Huge Backlash For Referring To The England Women’s Team As ‘Girls’

David Beckham is facing significant criticism for his choice of words after referring to the England Lionesses as ‘girls’.

The Lionesses achieved a remarkable victory over host nation Australia in the World Cup semi-finals, marking the first time a senior England side has reached a World Cup final since 1966.

Numerous celebrities took to social media to extend their good wishes and congratulate the team on this achievement. However, Beckham’s message has stirred a wave of backlash.

In the video, the former England captain addresses the team, saying, “Hey girls! I just wanted to say, wow. What a tournament it’s been so far. It’s been so much fun to watch and we’re all so proud as a nation of what you’ve achieved already.”

While Beckham’s intention was undoubtedly positive, many individuals have taken issue with him addressing the women’s team as ‘girls’.

One commentator expresses, “Next step: call us WOMEN not girls once we’re adults, please!” Another concurs, “Why girls?? They are women out there!!!”

A third viewer points out, “It’s WOMEN not girls,” while someone else elaborates, “People in the comments kicking off that he called them ‘girls’. Not being funny, but not once watching the team have I shouted ‘come on women.’ It’s always ‘come on girls’ or ‘let’s go girls’. Same as when I watch the men’s team… I never shout ‘come on men.’ Another individual shares this sentiment, “‘Come on boys or come on lads’ is a common term for the men’s national team. Same thing. Do you hear anyone getting offended by that? Absolutely not! Non-story. Come on England!”

However, there are those who appreciate Beckham’s well-wishing despite the phrasing. One commenter notes, “I’m amazed reading the negative comments from people instead of appreciating his well wishes.”

England is slated to compete against Spain in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, August 20. Should they secure a victory, they will become the first England team since 1966 to clinch a World Cup title.
