Following Mahsa Amini’s death, ongoing protests in Iran have sparked debate about hijabs and freedom.
Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi competed in an international competition in South Korea without wearing a hijab.
Rekabi, who is said to have defied the Islamic regime by attending the tournament without wearing a hijab, has not been in touch with her friends and family since Sunday, her mobile phone and passport were also confiscated, before boarding the plane to return back to Tehran.
By Tuesday morning, concerns about her safety had grown and Rekabi apologized by posting a story on her Instagram account.

The statement read:
“I apologize for the concerns I have caused.” Due to the timing and sudden call to begin the climb “my hijab unintentionally became problematic.” I am currently on my way back to Iran alongside the team based on the pre-scheduled timetable.”
The details of the apology statement remain unclear.
Elnaz Rekabi is also known as the second Iranian athlete to compete openly in defiance of Iran’s strict laws requiring women to wear hijabs.
