California Family Awarded $27M in Bullying Settlement

A California family has received a record $27 million in a settlement after their wrongful death suit against Moreno Valley Unified School District, marking the largest bullying payout in history.

The suit was filed on behalf of Diego Stolz’s legal guardians, his aunt and uncle, after he was fatally beaten by bullies at Landmark Middle School. Despite the bullies pleading guilty to manslaughter, they received no prison sentences.

The settlement aims to bring about change in school districts across the country and emphasizes the importance of addressing bullying seriously. Diego’s death was preventable had the school prioritized an anti-bullying policy. The settlement also includes additional training and protocols related to bullying prevention in schools.
