Beijing subway crash leaves 102 with broken bones

A collision between two subway trains during rush hour in Beijing has resulted in 102 people sustaining broken bones, with over 500 individuals sent to the hospital. The incident occurred during heavy snowfall on the Changping subway line, leading to slippery tracks and “signal degradation.” The first train braked suddenly, and the second train, unable to stop on the icy tracks, collided with the first one. The impact caused the last two carriages of one train to detach. Images and videos show commuters in dark carriages using emergency hammers to break windows for fresh air.

While no deaths were reported, 67 people remain hospitalized, and 25 are under observation. The incident has prompted criticism from Chinese netizens, with concerns raised about subway maintenance and inspections. Beijing Subway, responsible for the city’s transit network, apologized for the incident and pledged to cover medical expenses for the injured. In response to extreme weather conditions, the operator instructed manual driving for above-ground trains and widened intervals between trains. The affected subway line was closed, and disruptions in road, rail, and air transport were reported due to snowfall. Authorities expect temperatures to significantly drop in northern China in the coming days, leading to further challenges in transportation and daily life.
