Bangladesh v New Zealand: Mushfiqur becomes just second Test batter to be dismissed for obstructing field

On the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim made history by becoming only the second Test batter to be dismissed for obstructing the field. The incident occurred when the 36-year-old handled the ball as it bounced away from him while defending a delivery from Kyle Jamieson.

New Zealand appealed, leading to Mushfiqur’s dismissal. The only other Test batter to be dismissed in this manner was England’s Len Hutton in 1951. The law change in 2017 reclassified such dismissals under ‘obstructing the field,’ with seven instances recorded before the rule change. Bangladesh is aiming for its first-ever Test series win over New Zealand, having won the first match of the two-Test series by 150 runs. Despite Mushfiqur’s dismissal, Bangladesh bowled out for 172, with New Zealand struggling at 55-5 in response.
