Lanez has been in jail since his conviction in December, after he shot Grammy-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet with a handgun during an argument between them.
The rapper was found guilty of three gun-related crimes, and now prosecutors are seeking the 13-year prison term. The final decision on the sentence will be made by a Los Angeles court.
The case has caused a divide among fans and has had repercussions in the hip-hop community. Artists like 50 Cent and Drake have become involved in the controversy. Megan Thee Stallion took issue with Drake’s release of “Circo Loco,” a collaboration with 21 Savage that seemed to reference the shooting case in its lyrics.
50 Cent further fueled reactions by sharing memes featuring Megan and Tory Lanez as fictional characters, and he made comparisons between Megan and Jussie Smollett, the former Empire actor who was found guilty of falsely claiming to be the victim of a hate crime. Following massive backlash, the rapper issued an apology, citing a change of mind after hearing evidence from the trial.
On the other hand, Megan received support from fellow artists like JoJo and Kehlani. Both artists removed Tory Lanez from their albums, with Kehlani stating that she felt the need to “do the right thing” since the situation involved her close friend Megan.
