The “Friends” star, Matthew Perry said he had a 2% chance of survival when he was hospitalized at age 49.
“Friends” star Matthew Perry opened up about a near-death experience years ago from his battle with alcoholism and opioid addiction.
Matthew Perry, 53, said he had a 2% chance of survival when he extended his hospital stay in 2018. At the time, the actor’s agent said he had suffered a gastrointestinal perforation in an interview with People magazine for its cover story.
Now, Perry elaborates, saying he struggled to stay alive for weeks after his opioid overuse ruptured his colon. He was in a coma for two weeks and was hospitalized for five months. He also had to use a colostomy bag for nine months, he told People.
He said. “I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that’s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.”
Matthew Perry said he’s not ready to talk about his ordeal just yet. In his new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, he reveals more about his life and addiction journey.
“I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again,” he told People. “I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober — and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction — to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.”
He has been in rehab 15 times and has had 14 addiction-related surgeries. But he said he felt he could “handle it.” Do something.”
The series became an international sensation and ran for 10 seasons over 10 years. Perry said she had abstained from drinking during that decade, but by the time the show ended she was “in really big trouble.”
“Season 9 was the year that I was sober the whole way through. And guess which season I got nominated for best actor? I was like, ‘That should tell me something,’” he said.
He said his castmates have been understanding and patient throughout. Perry hopes his story will help others.
