A woman has come forward with an allegation of molestation during a crowded concert featuring composer AR Rahman. The concert, titled “Marakumma Nenjam,” took place at Adityaram Palace in Chennai city on Sunday (10 September). Unfortunately, the event experienced severe overcrowding, leading to a chaotic and “stampede-like” situation.
Numerous attendees reported that even with valid tickets, they were denied entry into the venue. One fan expressed, “It’s overcrowded, a stampede-like situation. No regulation at all.” Another concertgoer shared a distressing incident: “I asked a man, whom I addressed as Anna [meaning brother in the Tamil language], the way to leave the venue as I had a panic attack. He looked me in the eye, and the next thing I knew, his hand was on my breasts, and I was groped. I froze. I couldn’t move an inch. A horrific, traumatising experience I can never get over.”
The Independent has reached out to the event organizers for their response.
Many attendees have also posted videos and photos of the overcrowded conditions on social media platforms. AR Rahman acknowledged the “stampede-like” situation at the concert and announced that his team would refund those who had purchased tickets but were unable to attend the event.
In a post on social media, Rahman urged those affected to share their ticket purchase details along with their grievances. He stated, “Our team will respond asap.” Rahman also shared his message on Instagram, emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure, crowd management, and safety measures at Chennai’s live art events. He called for a cultural renaissance in the city, celebrating local and international talent while ensuring a safe and enriching experience for attendees, especially women and children.
