Ryan Reynolds expressed his affection for Wrexham following the success of the documentary on the Hollywood takeover of the football club, which received significant recognition at the Creative Arts Emmys.
In character as Deadpool from Marvel, Reynolds joyfully exclaimed, “Cymru am byth, bitches,” celebrating Wales and acknowledging the five awards earned by the Disney+ show Welcome to Wrexham.
Co-owner Rob McElhenney conveyed his gratitude for the honor, emphasizing the many individuals deserving recognition. In a video, he expressed, “I’ve awaited this moment for 16 years,” before Reynolds playfully interrupted him.
“First and foremost, Wrexham, we adore you… thank you for allowing Rob and the other guy to share your story,” quipped Reynolds as Deadpool, paying homage to his renowned film character.
The show chronicles Wrexham AFC’s management under Reynolds and McElhenney, highlighting the club’s successful comeback to the Football League after being absent for 15 years.
Reynolds humorously quipped that after securing Emmy wins, the Academy Awards—typically reserved for films—were the next target.
“The Oscars, watch out,” he quipped. “Perhaps we’ll snag a token VFX acknowledgment next year. The sheer effort put into Hugh [Jackman] and Ryan’s facial transformations is deserving of recognition, at the very least.”
Reynolds, stepping out of his usual persona, expressed gratitude on social media, acknowledging the town of Wrexham and Wrexham AFC for granting the opportunity to witness and share their story. He described it as the most significant privilege he has experienced and extended gratitude to the Emmy Awards for the recognition bestowed upon him.
