Top Gun: Maverick grossed over $700 million in North America, becoming one of six films to pass that milestone at the domestic box office.
The film returned to the top of the box office over Labor Day weekend, adding $7.9 million between Friday and Monday, taking ticket sales to his $701 million. According to Paramount, “Maverick” is his only film to reach No. 1 at the domestic box office on both Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays.
Fifteen weeks after its release, the sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 blockbuster has surpassed Marvel behemoth Black Panther ($704 million) to become the fifth highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. It became a movie. It’s impressive that ‘Top Gun”s successor has soared far beyond ‘Black Panther’ internationally and globally.Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell’s latest mission is to take his 700 million overseas. $40 million, grossing his $1.44 billion worldwide. Meanwhile, T’Challa’s superhero adventures earned him $674 million overseas and $1,347 million worldwide.
“It’s without a doubt, that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is a true cultural touchstone embodying the power of the cinematic experience,” said Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures. “As we celebrate this enormous achievement and the film’s massive impact, we want to extend our gratitude to Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, Paramount’s marketing and distribution teams, and the legions of both new and longtime ‘Top Gun’ fans who keep turning out to enjoy this remarkable movie.”
Globally, Top Gun: Maverick is the 12th-biggest movie, but is fast approaching number 11, which currently belongs to Disney’s Frozen II at $1.45 billion.
For the country’s struggling theater owners, Top Gun: Maverick was a gift that kept giving. The follow-up remained a strong box office magnet over the summer, spending 14 of the 15 weeks after its release in the top five at the domestic box office. This fact underscores the film’s staying power, as other tent poles like Jurassic World Dominion and Thor: Love and Thunder have come and gone in theaters. Additionally, although the film landed in home entertainment in late August, it’s still making money in theaters.
Top Gun: Maverick has set numerous box office records since Memorial Day weekend when the film set a holiday record with its $160.5 million debut. It was also his first film to exceed $100 million in a single weekend, and the first film to exceed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
Cruise has been well compensated for the revival of the film industry. By the time “Maverick” leaves theaters and lands on Paramount Plus, this extraordinary stunt is expected to earn him at least $100 million from ticket sales, salaries, home entertainment rentals and streaming earnings. I’m here.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick focuses on the exploits of Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he prepares a new group of aviators for a critical strike mission while feeling the need for speed. Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer are on screen.
