The defendant’s lawyers argue they should review Salman Rushdie’s upcoming memoir about the incident.

The trial for Hadi Matar, accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie in 2022, has been postponed in the US. Matar’s defense argued they need to review Rushdie’s upcoming book, which details the attack, potentially serving as evidence. Scheduled jury selection in upstate New York for January 8th was halted as the defense seeks material related to Rushdie’s memoir, “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder.”

The attack left Salman Rushdie injured, and Matar, a 26-year-old New Jersey resident, has been held without bail since. The trial delay, granted by Judge David Foley, frustrated the district attorney, Jason Schmidt, who assured the public that the outcome wouldn’t change.

Rushdie’s publisher and representative declined to comment on the matter. Rushdie, known for “The Satanic Verses,” had faced threats following its publication in 1988, prompting years in hiding.

In June, during an interview with BBC Newshour, Mr. Rushdie expressed uncertainty about confronting his alleged attacker in court.

“I’m torn,” he stated. “Part of me wishes to face him in court, to confront him directly, while another part of me feels indifferent.”

Mr. Rushdie conveyed his lack of esteem for his attacker, emphasizing his focus on moving forward and continuing with his life rather than being overly preoccupied with the individual.

Fans and critics are eagerly anticipating what Rushdie will bring to the table in his upcoming work. The plot thickens, and the literary world waits with bated breath. Let’s stay tuned for further updates on this intriguing story!
