Paul Mescal draws disapproval for not wearing poppies at Graham Norton show

Paul Mescal was a prominent guest on The Graham Norton Show this week.

Actors who joined Graham this week to discuss his new movie After Sun include Black Panther stars Michaela Cole and Winston Duke, My Policeman’s Emma Corrin, comedian Richard Ayoade and singer Loyle Carner. I was sitting next to anniversary honor.

The reasons for Paul’s decision to drop Poppy may seem obvious to some, but many people who watched Friday night didn’t get it, calling out the Normal People star on Twitter.

One outraged viewer asked:

“Why is Paul Mescal not wearing a Poppy on The Graham Norton Show????”

Directly addressing the actor, a second tweeted: “@mescal_paul where’s your poppy?!”

“Why is Paul Mescal not wearing a poppy?”, third wondered.

If you don’t know by now, don’t worry. A number of Irishmen were on hand to help the more desperate audience solve their problems.

 One Twitter user explained:

“He is Irish… we don’t wear them or celebrate British atrocities on our island,”

“It’s not our thing really… not overly keen on the old poppy over here… British soldiers committing atrocities in Ireland sort of turned us off it, but hey, each to their own,” another added.

Yes, you may have noticed that Irish celebrities tend to avoid wearing poppies when appearing on UK television around this time. Because it is seen as a tribute to British servicemen who did not leave.

Nearly 50,000 Irish died in the British army during World War I, but it remains a difficult move for Irish republicans to honor them with British poppies.

While many yelled at Paul for forgetting poppies, Irish viewers were thrilled to see that good old Paul decided not to wear poppies on TV.

One Irish fan raved, “Love that Paul Mescal isn’t wearing a poppy on #TheGNShow.”.

Another tweeted, “#GrahamNorton yes Paul mescal no poppy lad.”.

Overall, Ireland’s history with Great Britain is long and complex.

My only advice as an Irishman is that if you haven’t informed yourself about it, it’s probably best to keep quiet.

The Graham Norton Show can be seen on BBC One on Fridays at 10:40pm.
