Yellow Submarine, a 1968 animated musical comedy adventure film influenced by the music of the Beatles brings nostalgia and memories with it. Lucky for the fans, A new demo, published on The Beatles’ official YouTube page, reveals that “Yellow Submarine” used to sound much darker and more haunting.
The upbeat version of his that is so familiar today features vocals of Ringo Starr, but this recording that will eventually become the song is sung by John Lennon.
Starr told USA Today, “The boys used to write a song for me and they’d present whatever they thought would be good for me. They had this song and they decided to liven it up.”
The demo was posted online ahead of Friday’s release of an extended version of the album Revolver, widely regarded as the band’s masterpiece. The new release was remixed by Giles Martin, son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin.
Martin told the BBC, “There’s an acceptance of ‘OK, I’ve got this very sensitive and sad song, and Paul’s going to turn that into a hit for children. That didn’t happen later on ‘Abbey Road’ or ‘Let It Be,’ and I think that’s the key to ‘Revolver.’ They absolutely accepted each other’s direction.”
