1899 won’t get a second season on Netflix. The news was confirmed through a statement shared on the official Instagram of series co-creator Baran Bo Odar. The letter to fans was also signed by Oder’s partner and series co-creator Janche Freise.
“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that ‘1899’ will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with ‘Dark.’ But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life,” Odar wrote.
The statement continues,“We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”
Netflix was not immediately available for comment.
“1899,” which follows a group of immigrants on board a ship as they face a series of mysterious events, debuts on streamers on November 17, 2022. In his first week on the air, the international production reached his No. 2 spot on his Netflix Top 10 chart, placing him No. 2 behind ‘The Crown’ Season 5.
The series served as a sequel to Adar and Friese’s previous series Dark, Netflix’s landmark international breakthrough that premiered in 2017. In her three-season run of the beloved, Friese and Odar have signed an overall deal with Netflix. “1899” was the first project to emerge from this agreement.
