Margot Robbie expressed positivity about the movie’s nominations but noted disappointment over Greta Gerwig’s lack of recognition for best actress Oscar.
The Barbie star Margot Robbie had a sunny view of the movie’s nominations, except when it came to Greta Gerwig.
The film garnered eight Oscar nominations, notably for best picture, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress.
However, despite fan disappointment over her overlooked titular role, actress and producer Robbie expressed her lack of sadness.
During a SAG-AFTRA discussion alongside her co-stars, Robbie, who also produced the film, emphasized her gratitude, stating, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.”
She highlighted the film’s overarching mission to impact culture, deeming it the “biggest reward” amid its success, as reported by Variety.
Robbie also lamented the absence of Barbie director Greta Gerwig from the Academy Award nominations for directing, advocating for Gerwig’s recognition. Although Gerwig received a nomination for best adapted screenplay, Robbie believed her directing achievement warranted acknowledgment.
Reflecting on the film’s immense global box office success of $1.38 billion (£1.1 billion), Robbie noted the surprising outcome, defying initial industry forecasts that predicted the Super Mario Bros Movie to be the year’s top-grossing film in 2023.
The nominees for Best Supporting Actor and Actress from the film, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, both expressed their disappointment over the absence of their female counterparts among the nominations.
Gosling voiced his disappointment last week, stating, “I can’t express how disappointed I am that they weren’t nominated in their respective categories.” He emphasized, “There’s no Ken without Barbie, and there’s no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”
In addition to the recognition for the Best Original Song, Best Costume, and Best Production Design categories, Barbie garnered nominations.
Robbie, reflecting on the nominations, remarked, “It’s incredible to see everyone recognized, including the nod for Best Picture.” She emphasized, “Our aim was to create something that would resonate with and impact culture, and it has exceeded our wildest expectations. That, in itself, is the ultimate reward.”
Margot’s not letting it get her down. She spoke out about the snub and her reaction was just so classy. Instead of dwelling on it, she’s focusing on the positive and continuing to bring her A-game to the big screen. It’s refreshing to see a star handle disappointment with such grace. This just goes to show that awards don’t define talent. Keep slaying, Margot!
