House of the Dragon Finale shows the devastating Targaryen Civil War’s First Casualty

House of the Dragon star Olivia Cooke awaited “horror” from the Season 1 finale, the reason is revealed.

In the October 23rd finale, Rainilla (Emma Darcy) learns that her brother Aegon (Tom Glyn Carney) has usurped her as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Raenira considered bending the knee to keep the peace between the divided Targaryens, but her sons Prince Jakaerith (Harry Collett) and Luceris (Elliott Griholt) were also among Westeros’ other sent to join the lords to see if they would return their claim to the Iron Throne.

But the peaceful mission to Storm’s End takes a disastrous turn when Luceris confronts her uncle, Aymond (Ewan Mitchell). For those who need a reminder, Lucerys took out Aemond’s eye during a childhood brawl. So there was more than just political debate.

In an attempt to intimidate his nephew, Emond threatened to take out Luceris’ eyes and later pursued the young prince on dragonback. This action caused Vhagar to pursue Arrax with all his might, killing the dragon and Rhaenyra’s son in the process.

Aemond clearly didn’t want this outcome, turning to the Beast and saying, “Vhagar, no.”

Fans of George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, which inspired the Game of Thrones prequel series, expected that ending, but Luceris’ death in the House of the Dragon was still devastating to watch. Not only did it confirm the bloody nature of the civil war (known as the Dance of the Dragons), but it also suggested that every member of House Targaryen could be in danger.

We’re also fans of the sweet young prince, so it’s just sad to see him leave.

What’s next? HBO has renewed House of the Dragon for season 2. Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston Cole, confirms it.
