The singer FKA twigs, who appeared in a withdrawn campaign for the brand, says it shows “double standards”.

FKA twigs has issued a response following the ban of a Calvin Klein advertisement in which she was featured, with the UK regulator deeming it likely to cause serious offense by objectifying women. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found that the poster, showcasing the singer in a denim shirt revealing part of her buttocks and breast, focused on her body rather than the promoted clothing, presenting her as a “stereotypical sexual object.” Taking to Instagram, FKA twigs expressed her view that the ban showcased double standards and disagreed with the label of being a “stereotypical sexual object.” Instead, she emphasized her identity as a strong woman of color, highlighting the resilience of her incredible body in overcoming significant challenges.

She proceeded to seemingly make a reference to the recent Calvin Klein campaign featuring Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in “The Bear,” which made headlines last week. The actor was later questioned about it at the Golden Globes.

The artist continued by stating, “Upon examining other similar campaigns from the past and present, I can’t help but notice certain double standards at play here.

“So, let me clarify… I take pride in my physicality and hold the art I create with my body to the same standards as trailblazing women like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Grace Jones, who challenged societal norms and redefined what it means to be empowered, embodying a distinctive sensuality.”

The post concluded with gratitude towards Calvin Klein and fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining her own narrative. Calvin Klein defended the advertisement, asserting its similarity to the ones released in the UK over the years. In reaction to FKA’s post, an ASA spokesperson stated that the published ruling clarified why, in this instance, the ad violated rules by inappropriately objectifying a woman and having an inappropriate target audience.

FKA twigs, the incredibly talented singer and actress, has been making headlines for speaking out against the ban of her ad for Calvin Klein. The ad, which featured FKA twigs in a revealing outfit, was deemed to be inappropriate and banned in certain countries.

However, FKA twigs and her supporters are calling this out as a case of double standards. They argue that male artists are frequently seen in similar situations without facing the same consequences. It’s a great example of the ongoing battle against gender inequality and unfair treatment in the media. FKA twigs’ courage in speaking up about this issue is inspiring, and it opens up important conversations about representation and societal expectations. It’s definitely a topic worth discussing, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it too. Let’s keep the conversation going
