Liverpool will officially hand over the keys to Eurovision in a ceremony in Malmo, Sweden later.

In 2023, the city served as the host for the song contest event on behalf of Ukraine.

This year, Malmo will be the host following Loreen’s victory for Sweden in Liverpool with her song “Tattoo.”

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram will present the key, crafted by Merseyside artist Neal Keating in the form of an anchor – representing Liverpool’s twin city, Odesa, Ukraine.

The 30cm key was collaboratively designed by three regional artists who supervised its 3D printing, fabrication, and painting process.

Adorned with symbols such as the Liver Birds, a yellow submarine, a vinyl record to signify Liverpool’s Unesco City of Music designation, and the ‘United By Music’ slogan, the key is embellished in Eurovision colors.

The handover ceremony is scheduled to precede the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 semi-final draw, which will be broadcast live at 19:00 CET.

Mr. Rotheram, heading the Merseyside delegation, expressed his desire to capitalize on the song contest’s legacy in the city.

“While we aim to commemorate Liverpool’s contributions to Eurovision last year, our focus extends beyond celebration to explore the lasting impacts and potential partnerships,” he remarked.

“Malmo has expressed keen interest in discussions ranging from gaming, given their thriving industry in that sector. We envision this delegation as a platform for both cultural exchange and trade opportunities.”

In anticipation of today’s ceremony, Harry Doyle, the cabinet member for health, wellbeing, and culture at Liverpool City Council, expressed that while the event symbolizes the conclusion of Liverpool’s Eurovision involvement, the contest has left a lasting impression on the city.

“We’re not eager to bid farewell to Eurovision. I believe its impact will endure; we still feel that excitement and energy throughout the city,” he remarked.

“Hence, it won’t completely fade away. Though we’re reluctantly passing the torch, Malmo is poised to excel in hosting duties.”

From iconic performances to unforgettable moments, the Eurovision Song Contest has become a global sensation, and the tradition of passing the key from one city to another is a symbolic gesture of unity and celebration. As we eagerly await the next spectacular event in Malmo, let’s take a moment to appreciate the magic of Eurovision and the cultural connections it fosters. Get ready to sing, dance, and celebrate the diverse talents that will soon grace the stage in Sweden. Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s make Eurovision 2023 an unforgettable experience!
