Emma Thompson says she was ‘completely blindsided’ by ex-husband Kenneth Branagh’s relationships on set

Two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson admitted she was devastated to learn that her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh was dating another actress on set, admitting she “had no idea”.

The Love Actually star married Branagh in 1989 after meeting on the set of the drama series Fortunes of War in 1987.

When the couple’s marriage ended in 1995, Branagh was revealed to be dating fellow actress Helena Bonham Carter.

In The New Yorker’s November issue, Thompson, who starred opposite Bonham Carter in the 1992 literary piece Howard’s End, spoke of her pain and humiliation when learning about it.

Thompson told interviewer John Lahr, “I was utterly, utterly blind to the fact that he had relationships with other women on set. What I learned was how easy it is to be blinded by your own desire to deceive yourself.”

Branagh and Bonham Carter dated for five years. In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Bonham Carter described the controversy surrounding their romance as “all the blood under the bridge.”

“I was half alive. Any sense of being a lovable or worthy person had gone completely,” Thompson said recalling how the collapse of her six-year marriage affected her mental health.

After starring in films like Matilda and Nanny McPhee, Thompson fell in love again with her Sense and Sensibility co-star, Greg Wise, and won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Emma Thompson said Weisz, whom she married in 2003, “picked up the pieces and put them back together,” and the couple has two children.

“I’ve learned more from my second marriage just by being married. As my mother says, ‘The first twenty years are the hardest,’ “Emma Thompson said, reflecting on her life with Wise.
