Kate Garraway says messages of support mean “so much” after the death of her husband Derek Draper.

Garraway expressed deep gratitude for the supportive messages during her appearance on Good Morning Britain, emphasizing how much they truly meant to her. She also highlighted the extraordinary comfort these messages provided to her family. Draper, Garraway’s husband since 2005 and a former political adviser turned author, shares two children, Darcey and Billy, with her. His battle with lingering COVID-19 symptoms required ongoing care, an ordeal that Garraway documented in ITV documentaries.

In a heartfelt message to GMB viewers, Garraway expressed deep gratitude on Monday, acknowledging the invaluable connection felt through their messages during a time where the weight of grief can be incredibly isolating.

She emphasized the immense support received, attributing it as the driving force that has upheld both herself and Derek through nearly four difficult years. This support has served as motivation to persevere for one another and for those who are unable to fight for themselves. Garraway expressed confidence that this same support will continue to fortify them in the ongoing battle ahead, spanning weeks, months, and years to come.

Looking ahead optimistically, she eagerly anticipated the prospect of reuniting with viewers on Good Morning Britain, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to collectively embrace life’s joys and challenges once again.

It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride for me and my family lately. As many of you know, my husband Derek Draper passed away recently, and the pain has been unimaginable. I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of you amazing supporters out there. Your kind words, thoughts, and prayers have been a source of great comfort during this incredibly tough time.

She added, “I hope you can understand my need to spend some time at home. Being able to be with our beloved Derek during his last moments is a gift not everyone has.

“Perhaps you’re also experiencing grief now or have in the past. My thoughts and support are with you in these times.

“Now that Darcey and Billy know their daddy is no longer in pain and at peace, we are focusing on healing ourselves. Until we’re together again, my thoughts will be with all of you.

“Meanwhile, cherish those you love dearly. With all my affection, Kate.”

Sir Tony Blair, the former prime minister, led the tributes on Friday, portraying Draper as a “valuable colleague and an exceptional friend.”

Draper fell into a coma in April 2020 due to a Covid diagnosis, only waking up in October of that year. Although he recovered from Covid by June, his body sustained lasting damage, leading to multiple hospitalizations over the following four years. In December, news emerged that he experienced a severe heart attack, placing him in a critical state. Consequently, Garraway has opted for an indefinite break, canceling all her television and radio commitments.
