Chris Hemsworth is retiring from acting after discovering he has a genetic predisposition to developing Alzheimer’s disease.
The actor recently discovered in an episode of Disney+’s Limitless that he is genetically predisposed to developing the condition.
The Thor actor spotted the news while filming the fifth installment of his Disney+ series Limitless.
Hemsworth’s DNA contains two copies of the APOE4 gene, making him 8 to 10 times more likely to develop progressive neuropathy than the average person.
He told Vanity Fair in an article published Thursday that after learning the news, he plans to take time off from work after completing a press tour for the documentary series.
The 39-year-old actor’s grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and told Vanity Fair some more about it.
Hemsworth said, “I’m not sure he actually remembers much anymore, and he slips in and out of Dutch, which is his original language. He’ll be talking [in] Dutch and English and then a mash-up and then maybe some other new words as well.”
The Australian actor Chris Hemsworth revealed that filming the episode about such a heavy topic made him realize he’s “not ready to go yet.” The genetic revelation also led to him meeting with death doulas for the series’ final episode.
“It really triggered something in me to want to take some time off. And since we finished the show, I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do,” Hemsworth said.
The star has already finished production on Netflix’s Extraction 2 and an upcoming film called Furiosa, a prequel to George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
“Now, when I finish this tour this week, I’m going home, and I’m going to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife,” he added.
Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky, 46, have three children, India, 10, and twins, Sasha and Tristan, 8.
The father of three children went on to share that Disney presented him with a version of Limitless without a diagnosis, but he was adamant about keeping the full version.
Chris Hemsworth said, “Look, if this is a motivator for people to take better care of themselves and also understand that there are steps you can take — then fantastic.”
“My concern was I just didn’t want to manipulate it and overdramatize it and make it into some sort of hokey grab at empathy or whatever for entertainment,” He added.
Chris Hemsworth, who has starred as the hammer-wielding thunder god in no less than eight Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, shared in an interview that he was “completely open” to revisiting the title character at some point.
“I’ve always loved the experience. I’ve been very thankful I’ve been able to do something different each time,” the actor said of playing Thor.
Episodes of Limitless are now streaming on Disney+.
