Cher’s request for a temporary conservatorship over her son Elijah Blue Allman has been rejected by a judge in the US. The singer had filed for the order last year citing Allman’s purported substance abuse and mental health issues.
However, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jessica A Uzcategui denied the petition, stating that Allman had demonstrated “he has managed his finances” and “has remained drug-free”. Allman had undergone multiple drug tests prior to the hearing.
A conservatorship is typically granted by a court for individuals who are unable to make their own decisions due to conditions such as dementia or other mental illnesses. It can be utilized to oversee a person’s financial or personal affairs, or both.
According to reports from US media outlets, Cher’s legal team reiterated concerns about Allman’s mental health during the hearing. The judge acknowledged Cher’s concerns, stating, “I don’t question Cher’s concerns being driven by concern for her son. I don’t think [Allman] questions that.” However, she concluded that much of the arguments presented by the star’s legal team were based on hypotheticals and “fears”.
The Associated Press reported that Judge Uzcategui will still consider the possibility of a larger, long-term conservatorship at a hearing scheduled for March.
