Netflix removed the film “Annapoorani” featuring Nayanthara following backlash from Hindu groups. Critics from hard-line Hindu groups objected to the film’s portrayal of a Brahmin character consuming meat.
Members of hard-line Hindu groups had criticised the film for showing a Brahmin character eating meat.
Actress Nayanthara stars in the film “Annapoorani” as a Hindu Brahmin woman aspiring to become a chef, challenging her family’s religious beliefs by consuming meat. This sparked objections from hard-line Hindu organizations, particularly over scenes depicting her offering Muslim prayers and a Muslim character suggesting that Hindu god Ram ate meat.
A police case has been filed in Madhya Pradesh against Nayanthara and two others associated with the film. The controversy erupted after the film’s release on Netflix, following clearance by India’s censor board. Amid protests, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the co-producer, issued an apology and pledged to work with Netflix to temporarily remove the film for edits. While some applaud the move, others, like actress Parvathy Thiruvothu, express concern about it setting a “dangerous precedent.”
