The publicist confirmed that the Mexican star battled appendiceal cancer. Renowned for his role as the national security adviser in Designated Survivor alongside Kiefer Sutherland, the actor was fondly remembered by Sutherland as “a wonderful spirit.” Canto portrayed the mutant Sunspot in the 2014 X-Men film and earned a role in Halle Berry’s movie Bruised, thanks to their collaboration.
On her Instagram account, the actress and director expressed, “I’m at a loss for words right now… but my beloved friend Adan has just earned his wings. Always, always in my heart.”
Stephanie Ann, Canto’s wife, shared a picture of the couple along with a Bible verse, and wrote, “Adan, you will forever be my treasure. Until we meet again.”
According to a statement from his publicist Jennifer Allen, “Adan possessed a profound spirit that only a few truly understood. Those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of it were forever changed. He will be deeply missed by countless individuals.”
In his message, Sutherland expressed, “As an actor, Adan’s remarkable drive to excel, to achieve greatness, and continuously strive for improvement was truly commendable, and his absence will be deeply felt. Canto portrayed Aaron Shore in Designated Survivor, originally on the ABC network in 2016 and 2017, later picked up by Netflix for its third and final season.
