Reports from both Deadline and Variety suggest that Quentin Tarantino is set to collaborate once again with Brad Pitt for his final directorial venture, titled “The Movie Critic.”
According to sources, negotiations are underway for Pitt to take on a role in the film. This potential project would mark Pitt’s third collaboration with Tarantino as a director, following their work together on “Inglourious Basterds” (2009) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2019). Additionally, Pitt appeared in “True Romance” (1993), a film scripted by Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott.
Representatives for Pitt and Tarantino have been contacted by USA TODAY for further details.
Brad Pitt would potentially be the inaugural confirmed actor for Tarantino’s upcoming project, “The Movie Critic.” The film is anticipated to draw inspiration from an authentic film critic whom the director holds in high regard. Tarantino disclosed to Deadline in 2023 that the narrative unfolds in California during 1977, centering on a real individual who, though not widely recognized, authored film critiques for an adult publication.
It remains uncertain whether Pitt, aged 60, will portray the titular movie critic. Previously, Tarantino indicated to Deadline that the film’s protagonist would be a “fresh leading man” for him, expected to be approximately 35 years old.
Pitt clinched the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” portraying Cliff Booth, a stuntman alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in 1969’s Hollywood. The movie, nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture, enjoyed considerable success at the box office, raking in nearly $400 million globally.
At 60 years old, Tarantino has long expressed his intention to conclude his directing career after his 10th film, aiming to uphold a consistent standard of excellence in his body of work. In a 2021 appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” he remarked, “I know film history, and from here on in, directors do not get better.”
This decision positions “The Movie Critic” as Tarantino’s final directorial endeavor, as he regards his “Kill Bill” series as a single cinematic entity. Post-retirement, Tarantino envisions the possibility of directing television projects while also continuing his ventures into literature. Already, he has ventured into this realm by releasing a novelization of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in 2021 and a book of film analysis titled “Cinema Speculation” in 2022.
Despite lacking a confirmed release date or distributor, “The Movie Critic” awaits its place in Tarantino’s distinguished filmography.
